Water bottles and airport security
Check your departure airport’s current liquid rules before packing a water bottle. The same rules may not apply to your connection or return flight.
General planning guidance. Airport and airline procedures can differ. Use the official links below to confirm what applies to your journey.
Check the airport, not just the bottle size
GOV.UK explains that liquid limits depend on the airport. Water counts as a liquid, and the rules can apply to the capacity of the container even when it is only partly full.
Carrying an empty refillable bottle is a useful option to check with your airport. Follow its instructions for emptying containers and presenting them at security, including any separate guidance for metal bottles. Security staff make the final decision about items passing through screening.
Find a refill point you can reach
Use the airport’s official map or facilities page to look for a drinking-water fountain or bottle refill station. Check the terminal and security side before planning your route.
- Look for a named gate, toilet block or other landmark.
- Check that the point dispenses drinking water and can fill your bottle.
- If you need step-free access or a lower dispenser, confirm the design with the airport.
- Ask airport staff for another drinking-water point if one is unavailable.
Plan for connections and the return journey
You may encounter another security checkpoint while transferring. Check the rules of each airport you pass through, including the airport for your flight home.
For baby milk, medical liquids or special dietary requirements, use the specific GOV.UK guidance and the airport’s instructions. Do not apply an ordinary drinking-water rule to those circumstances.
A research gap is not a missing fountain
Our initial airport-facility records remain research, not published listings. If a refill location has not yet been confirmed here, follow the official airport link rather than assuming you will need to buy water.
