Can you smoke after airport security?

There is no single answer for every airport and terminal. Check the airport’s own policy before security, and use only an area it explicitly designates for smoking or vaping.

General planning guidance. Airport and airline procedures can differ. Use the official links below to confirm what applies to your journey.

Find the policy for your terminal

An outdoor smoking area before security does not establish that an airside area exists. A terrace, lounge or open-air space is not a smoking area unless the airport says it is.

Look for the airport’s smoking policy and terminal map. Confirm whether the policy applies to your terminal, and whether any designated area has an access charge, venue restriction or limited opening hours.

Check vaping separately

Do not assume that vaping is allowed wherever smoking is prohibited, or that carrying an e-cigarette permits its use. Check the airport’s rules for use and the airline’s rules for carriage. These are different questions.

Do not assume you can leave and return

Leaving airside to reach a landside smoking area can require another security check. On a connection, border control and permission to enter the country may also affect your options.

Ask airport staff about your specific journey before leaving the secure area. Allow for all required checks and the airline’s boarding deadline; this guide cannot judge whether your connection gives you enough time.

The questions to settle before you fly

Use this checklist with the airport’s current information. A missing answer should remain uncertain until the airport confirms it.

  • Is there a designated area in the terminal I am using?
  • Is it before security or after security?
  • Does the same policy cover vaping?
  • Is access restricted, paid or subject to opening hours?
  • Would using it require security screening or border checks again?
